Default Deformed oto

My LFS has a deformed oto in one of their tanks. It has been there for at least a month and does great. Other otos have come and gone but noone seems to want to buy him. Possibly for the same reason I am reluctant to pick him up. Beside an injury (bend tail starting about 2/3rds down the fish)could it be tuberculosis? Swims fine, eats fine, looks fine other then the tail and is a grown up oto. Larger that some of the ones I have in my tank. I feel sorry for him and have room left for one oto. Should I get him? Or is it too risky?

Do you have a quarentine tank? If you want him and are worried, just QT him for a bit.
Usually, malnutrition and poor environment for the fry causes these things, as well as the rare genetic defect.
I took home a Z shaped leleupi once as i felt bad for him. I have never heard of TB being a cause of fish deformity but could be i suppose. I'd suspect rearing conditions first however.

Yes...quarantineing the oto would be best. I took a swordtail that was a bit deformed a while ago, and it turned out to be my favorite fish. I'm glad that you are decent enough to give a deformed fish a good home.

I have a deformed tiger barb with a missing eye (it's weird, there's black "stuff" filling the socket, but it's not an eye), and a crooked jaw where the upper and lower jaw don't meet to close up (looks like he has a cleft pallet or something). I was thinking about returning him because he was so ugly and creepy looking, but I've grown fond of him. He's actually a really easy going fish that doesn't bother any of the other fish and he's a cute little thing. I dunno if he'll grow though, because he came from the same tank as my other barbs, and all the others have grown about half and inch but this one hasn't... If i were you, I would try the oto out. I mean, if you didn't care, you wouldn't be pondering over it, and you obviously do care about this poor little fella.
