Can I get more fish for my tank?

Hey everyone,

Right now I have a 54 gallon tank that has 21 Corydoras (1-3in.), 9 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, 3 Upside-Down Catfish, 2 Dwarf Gouramis, and 1 CAE (peaceful). Some people have told me that I could get something else (eg. 8 Neon Tetras or a pair of Swordtails), and some people have said my tank is stocked. What do you think? Could I get a few more fish...or no?

I think you could get away with a small school of something. I'd get a small school of some kind of tetra.

I think yo uare very close, but could probably afford a few more inches as long as you have adequate filtration.

I agree with Katie....you have room for a small school of something....or a trio of Swordtails if you like those better. Check out Lemon tetras. They are pretty and are small. Also, Rummynose tetras would be good.

Ok, thank-you guys! Looks like the majority says yes. My pet store is ordering fish tomorrow, so I'll see if they have any cool tetras or livebearers on the order list.

i would say you are pretty good right now. remember the one inch per gallon rule. appl that here. if ou have enough airflow then they will stay healthy but it will stunt their growth. if you dont mind them staying kinda small then you good.

The inch per gallon rule is outdated and false. Do not rely on this guideline.

Air flow will keep them healthy? Sure, in general, but that doesn't really apply here at all. And are you saying increased "airflow" causes stunting? I'd like to hear how...

Stunting is not good. Its not just a matter of the said fish staying smaller than normal, but the internal organs continue to grow. This causes deformity and premature death. Not good in my opinion.

Agreed with Scuba. Stunting is irresponsible and fatal to the fish.

As you can see in my signature, those are the fish I have in my 38 Gallon. I just added 3 cardinal tetras and they were being chased around by my rainbows non stop, I went back to see them tearing apart the body and eating the cardinals. I took the last 2 out of their misery, they were almost dead from the bites too.

I see you said neon, that's close to cardinals. Now I don't know why the rainbows did what they did. Even 3 stores really have no clue why it happened, but it did.

So I have come to learn that even super professionals don't even know the the answer to my question which I will have for a very long time, as the fish I had were "peaceful" and showed no signs of attacking EVER, until the other day.
