I have an Oranda and some guppy's and black neons. (The Oranda is in a seperate tank) I wanted to start feeding my fish something other than flakes and pellets, and was wondering what would be good for them?

i would feed the Oranda some oranges. just cut little slices and drop hem in the tank. you can also feed any of the fish vegatable crisps by tetralgae. they dont cloud up the water and are healthy for your fish. all the fish i have enjoy them alot.

Do you peel the oranges?? and Ill have to look into those tetralgae.

I find Tetra-brand foods to be mostly fillers (wheat flour, etc) Feed your tropicals some frozen bloodworms, or other varieties of frozen foods.

I feed my fish a variety of things. Their staple is TetraMin Pro Crisps. I rotate in dried Tubifex Worms in a cube, dried bloodworms (dried bloodworms are fortified, frozen are not), frozen brine shrimp, and I may experiment again with some lettuce.

It depends on what brand of frozen you get. Hikari fortifies their frozen worms. Also, when given the choice, I've found fish will ultimately go crazy for frozen over freeze-dried. Lastly, you incur the risk of bloat when you feed freeze-dried, if the food is not hydrated enough when the fish eat it.

For the goldie - fresh (or frozen) veggies - peas, string beans, zukes, etc are all good.
Fresh bunch plants (anacharis etc) are also good.

for the others - I'd add in a variety of frozen foods - daphnia, bloodworms, spirulina-enriched brine shrimp, etc.
Also mix up your flake food brands - sometimes one brands foods all contain similar ingredients no matter which "formula" you use, so its good to mix in other brands and formulas.
I like the Super Color, Veggie, and Kelp flakes from Omega One, as well as the Formula One and Forumla Two foods from Ocean Nutrition, and the Veggie flakes from HBH - all of those are pretty different from most common "tropical flakes" in composition, and make a nice dietary change.

I like freeze dried foods as vitamin delivery systems - I put a few worms or shrimp in a dixie cup and add a squirt of Boyd's Vitachem. Usually the dry food soaks up the vitamins in a few minutes, and when I feed the food to the fish they slurp down their vitamins

Good brands are Hikari and Omega. I am sure there are lots of other good brands, I have just always consistently heard good things about those brands. I also recently bought some HBH spirulina that the fish really seem to enjoy.

you dont have to peel the oranges. you can also buy clamps at petsmart to hold the oranges. they really like the oranges.

If you feed the oranges, you will need to do a water change afterwards, they turn the water fairly acidic.

So, are there very specific fruits and veggies they can eat, or can they have a variety? Or should I just stick with just the specially made fish stuff?
