Has anyone dealt with these fish? I've noticed that when the lights are out in their aquarium at night they lose their black stripe. I also moved one today to a different tank and it lost its black stripe for awhile. The black stripes have always returned *knock on wood* when the lights are back on, or in the case of the one that was moved, after it calmed down a bit.
Is this normal? |

mine do the same and it's so noticeable that even 5-10 minutes after the light turns on, they are still pale and seemingly confused. it's actually kind of funny - if you feed them right after the light turns on - they have no clue and swim around like they've never seen food before!!

Fish lose color in the dark and then regain it when the lights are back on. It's very normal.

A lot of fish... but some that have been captive bred for so long have probably lost that ability

I guess that would give them the ability to blend in with their surroundings. Hmm Thats really interesting!

It's a camuflage thing (spelling?) When it's dark, and fish are brightly colored, any light that gets through the water flashes off of them(espacially in tetras) and the fish flash bright colors. In the dark, this is just saying to larger fish, "I'm over here and I want to get eaten". So they lose their color at night to help blend in with their suroundings.
