Default Main foods: flake, algae wafers - what else?

I would like to add a third (if not fourth) type of food to my feeding regimen, but am not sure what direction to go. Currently I feed my tetras/gourami's 80% flake and 20% algae wafers.

Variety for the sake of overall fish health is the goal, and from a convenience standpoint - I'd like to stay away from frozen and fresh foods if possible.

Any suggestions for what would be the most beneficial choice?

Thanks to all those that are taking the time to read this!

Why stay away from frozen foods? They're really good for the fish.

If you only want to do dry stuff, try some dried worms. You can easily find dried tubifex worms in cubes as well as fortified dried bloodworms.

I agree with COM (for once ) frozen foods are great for the fish, and not very messy at all (if that's what you're worried about.) You can try freeze-dried worms, but just be sure to hydrate them first. Try high-quality flakes, and vary the type. I feed my fish 2 kinds of flake, 1 kind of crisp (rarely, as it's not very high in quality) 1 kind of sinking pellet, and frozen bloodworms once a week. They're happy and colorful, the females are constantly trying to spawn!

Some good brands of flake are Ocean Nutrition and Omega One.

I actually took Julie's advice on the Ocean Nutrition food and found some at Petco. The fish ate it up and I liked the nutrition label.

I'm against frozen foods because my fridge is fairly far from my tank, and I'm trying to keep my costs down...and I guess I'm just lazy! Maybe I should suck it up and get some - and give it to them as a treat.

I like the idea of freeze-dried tubifex that are re-hydrated and fed to the fish. I think that will be what I rotate into my feedings immediately.

I currently do skinned-peas and my fish definitely love that...I'll have to give the cucumber a shot!

Thanks everybody!
