Two days ago I added a new Cory to our tank. He was a runt and never had much activity. We were hoping he was just stressed. He would lay at the bottom most of them time and then have bursts of activity. The other four Cories were fine.
We came home tonight to find the other four cories laying on the bottom of the tank breathing very quickly. I threw a chunk of frozen brine shrimp in the tank and they all livened up and fed. Now all four of them are laying there breathing very heavily. Is is possible the other Cory brought a parasite in that only effects them? The other fish are seemingly fine. I just did a 20% water change on Sunday. Test: Nitrate - 0-10 Nitrite 0-.5 Total Hardness - 250 which it has always been Total Chlorine - 0-.5 Total Alkalinity - 120 pH - 7.6 Should I remove them from the tank? Your advice is much appreciated.

Your Nitrite is a little high, which could be affecting them. I'd keep doing WCs until it goes down. Test your water out of the tap. From your results, it sounds like you're using a strip test. Those aren't very reliable, I'd suggest picking up a liquid drop test kit.

I don't see an ammonia reading either (strips include hardness but not ammonia...
). I wonder if the change in stock caused a little ammonia spike. If they are breathing heavily you could add an airstone to the tank if you don't have one already. It won't hurt to do a small water change soon either. |

I'm happy to report that they are all doing fine now. I guess they might have eaten a one too many chunks of shrimp and got a bit lathargic. At least that is my best guess.
I will however look into getting a drop kit test and an air stone.

Awesome! Glad to know they are doing well now.
Yep a liquid test kit is something good to invest in. Its much more accurate than the strips. The Aquarium Pharmaceuticals master kit has all you'll need (unless you want a general and carbonate hardness test). It is cheaper online than in stores. |
