I moved three Marigold Swordtails (1 M, 2 F) and 4 Blue Mickey Mouse Platys (2 M, 2 F) from my 20 gallon tank to my 29 gallon.
The platys were easy to net and are taking well to the new tank. The swords, however, were really hard to catch. I practically had to take apart the entire tank to get them. One female is hiding in a little pocket of driftwood. The other was hiding on the other side of the tank behind a rock but it looks like she is now moving about a little and playing with the rasboras. The male is hiding behind another rock. Is this normal? Is there anything that I can do to make this less traumatic for them? |

I've found fish tend to do this when moved, but they calm down within the next couple of days. They just need to readjust to the new surroundings

I just brought five False Julli Cories home and I got a bit freaked out as well. They went straight for the heavily planted part of the tank and just layed there for hours. Now they are darting all over the tank. Someone needs to tell them they are bottom dwellers. lol

Cories will go all over the tank. They spend more time at the bottom than anywhere else, but not all their time there by any means.

Fish just take a little time to adjust to new surroundings and the whole moving (netting, etc...) process.
They are so funny! Glad yours chilled out.

Oh man, something like that happened with me when I worked at Petc0...
I was netting a redtailed shark for a customer, and I plunked the net into the tank. The shark starts bugging out, and rams itself headfirst into the gravel. The customer and I watch, stunned, as the fish slowly floats up, apparently dead. We looked at each other..."Did...did he just kill himself?" I caught another one without incident. After the customer left, I checked the tank, and the shark was fine! Playing dead, I guess...sneaky little guy

All evidence that fish are much much smarter than commonly believed. If fish had a 3 second memory, how would they know exactly where to hide in a tank? How would they know to fear a net the moment we drop it in the water?
