I am breeding paradise fish, I have bred over 100 and sold them sucessfully. I have 4 tanks to breed fish in. Two 10's, 50, and 100 gallon. I am looking to improve my breeding. Any tips?

Maybe some kiddie pools outside? Those should produce thousands of fry each season.

Excellent idea but I live in San Diego and have NO backyard!!! Really crammed here.
The fools who built the house... Anyway, how would you maintain the pools. Do you need live plants? What is the best way to go about doing things? |

Oh, well, I would toss some anacharis into a small kiddie pool and let it sit a couple of weeks. Then I'd add the fish, and stand back. In a week or two I'd take out the adults and let the fry have some room to grow quickly.
Big sponge filters work fine. Live plants are very, very helpful. The fish use them to help anchor their nests, and they feed the fry while filtering the water. |

Thanks. When is the paradise fish season? I might just try to try your advice.

In SD, I'd expect paradisefish to spawn pretty much year round.
You ask how you can "improve" your breeding. What areas do you feel could use improvement ? quality of the offspring ? size ? Color ? Finage ? quantity ? Are you selecting your breeders for any specific traits ? Are you keeping the males and females separate until you breed them ? Are you feeding them anything special to condition them ? What are you feeding the fry ? Are you culling out any poor quality fry ? Are you pulling out any exceptional fry to breed back to their parents (or each other) ?

What do you feed them? My fry raising tips are microworms and azoo artificial artemia.

Quantity is where I need help.
I feed my fish wardly sectrum max with brineshrimp and bloodworms on the side. I feed my fry first bites and they get lots of natural bugs in the tank to choose from. I have a really cool fish. It's got a 4 forks on it's tail. like a tail within a tail. I want to breed that trait. I am not keeping the males and females seperate. Should I? Basically, my babies are not breeding. They are about 2 to 2 1/2 inches long. Do they need to be older. I also need to improve caring for the fry. San Diego is the pits. Don't move here., well, I guess its not all that bad. |
