I've checked out my local pet shops and neither of them carry substrate. Is there anywhere online that anyone has ordered from? Is there something specific that I should look for?

I got my eco-complete on eBay. What do you need substrate for? Plant susbtrate? Cichlid substrate?

I have Eco-Complete, I got it on eBay. What kind of plants are you trying to grow? What's your lighting?

I have low lighting (about 1 wpg) so I'd like just java fern and some Anubias.

Hmm. Well, neither of those are supposed to be planted in the gravel, so that could be your issue. You can bury the thin roots, but you need to keep the hard, stem-like part (the rhizome) above the gravel.

I agree, I would take them out of the gravel and tie them to a rock or something (wood, decorations work too).
If you were to increase your lighting in the future, that is when I would worry about getting a different substrate. |

If you were to still go with Eco-Complete, it priced out quite well for me on petsolutions.com. It was $19 for 20 pounds (a few dollars cheaper than doctorsfoster.com) and an amazingly low rate of $9.99 shipping, when I had 60 pounds in my 'cart'.
