Default Old topic: nervous BALA

Hmmm... I've posted this topic when the 'old' forum ran. Well, yeah, still now, my Bala sharks are still so nervous that whenever I approach, they madly swim all over the place. Often do they mess around the plant, mess the subtrate up, have the water all over the floor, hit themselves to glass, scare the other tankmates as well. I don't know how to handle this. Note: I always approach slowly and steadily.
Thanks alot.

I had a friend that wouldn't allow anyone in his discus room with a hat on because the discus would do the same thing if someone had a hat on. Strange things can trigger fish.

Maybe more plants so they feel hidden?

Hmm.. There are quite many plants around. But they don't seem to swim find a place to hide, they just swim nervously at the open air I mean open water area. And oh, God! They don't really nevigate my hands dipped into the water, sometimes when I clean something, they just can't recognize that my hands are just nearby .
Hmmm how should try approach there naked .

Could you repost your tank size and inhabitants? Also your water parameters?

i found a trick that worked with my clown loach (before he died) when he was doing the same thing..... leave your tank light on, but turn off all the other lights in the room, that way, teh fish cant see out of the tank, so they dont know you're there.... kinda like how if you have lights on in your house, and its dark outside, you cant see out? same thing with the fish

Do you have many Bala Sharks? I understand they are schooling fish, so they need to be kept in groups to make them feel safe. But they are also strong and vivid swimmers so they require lots and lots of space. Hope you have a large tank so they have enough room to swim without hitting the glasses all the time.

Well, two isn't really a group of fish so that is probably why they are scared. 6-8 individuals of the same species is kind of minimum for schooling fish. But with Bala sharks you have to have a really big tank to give 6-8 Bala sharks enough of space. They aren't the easiest to please.
