At LAke Simcoe and surrounding canals and rivers about 30 miles from me there has been a mass die off of fish in the last month. People who live near the waterways have been asked to bag up any dead fish on their property and put them out to garbage. This is creating some interesting odors as it is summer!!
Ministry of natural resources in struggling to find out the cause-- one "guess" this week is that the dieoff is due to columnaris. Then they say at the end of the article that it is not contagious to people and they can still be eaten. Not a good idea I would think.

I only know where BobCaygen is roughly. It is near lake huron which is a huge cold water lake connected to the St Lawrence seaway by other lakes.
I have not heard of any problems there. Lake Simcoe is an inland lake that works pretty much on a man made canal system. It gets lots of agricultural run off and quite warm thru the summer. They so far keep refering to carp but if it is columnaris Wouldn't you expect other fish to die as well?

Lake Simcoe is North of Toronto and Newmarket. Barrie is on the lake on the Southwest side, I think.
It is never a good idea to eat fish that have washed up dead on the s****************. |
