Default Ghost Shrimp

I have a small 30 gallon community tank at work. 8 tetra & 3 dainos. I would like to add some ghost shrimp in there. Can I do that and expect them to survive? Do they need food? Is sand an OK substrate for them?

Thanks!

Don't worry. The shrimp are very hardy. They will survive. They're only 20-50 cents anyway.

Ghost shrimp will eat any leftover food, and even swim to the top of the water to take their share of lunch

They'll survive unless one of your other fish decide to eat them.

Ian is right, they're pretty cheap. My LFS sells them 3 for $1 in the feeder section.

Ghost Shrimp are excellent bottom feeders and make great tankmates for a tropical community tank. They are 26 cents at my local Petsmart and they do get along with other bottom feeders such as cories.

Thanks guys! I will give them a shot. I ave only used them in my 125g tank in the past as feeders, but I think it would be neat to keep them with fish that would allow them to thrive.

One word of caution. I've heard that a lot of stores sale fish eating prawns as ghost shrimp. If it gets over 2 inches and starts looking at your fish like they are a tasty treat then you know you have a prawn.

Mmm prawns... I've never heard of that. I really like ghost shrimp but mine all got eaten, probably by my julies or clowns.

Exclamation

DON'T get a prawn. They kill your fish and eat your plants. 2 months after I got one, there was nothing living in my tank except the prawn and some microbes
