Default One fish story that I will never forget!!!!

I had one Zebra Danio left in the tank for the longest time, as I couldnt catch him the last time I tried. Since it was months since he was alone, I figured it was time to give him a new home and send him to my brothers who has 3 danios.

The light was off so I grabbed a net and put it in, waited for the danio to swim over and pulled the net up. I had him! Yes, I thought.

My plan was to transport him to my brothers tank who lives about 20 minutes away by car.

So I grabbed a 1 gallon pail and I put water from the tank into it and put him in, I then took some saran wrap and covered it but not all the way. I put the pail in my passenger seat and I started to drive. I kept checking to see if it was still okay and it was. About 5 minutes into my driving I looked and noticed him on my seat jumping around! So when I stopped at the red light I tried to grab him, but he kept flapping eveywhere. I was freaking out, because I thought a fish can only live a few minutes without water.

So I made a left turn and pulled to the side of the road and as I opened my door I knocked the pail over and all the water spilled out. Now I was really worried. I went to pick up the danio and as I did that, he jumped into the crack between the seats to the bottem. I couldn't fit my hand in there so I had to think quickly how I would get him out. I found a pen and I put it inbetween and started to gently flick him a few times to the front of the middle part. I then grabbed him and put him in the pail. There was a tiny little bit of water in it, so I held the pail a little tipped at an angle and the danio could kind of just lay there with a little water going over his gills. I had to hold it at an angle to keep him moistened with water.

I then SPED all the way across town, and traffic was a little heavy at times, but I weaved through until I came to my brothers house. I told him to open the door and have the tank lid open. I ran down the stairs with the pail and I dumped him into the tank. Amazingly enough he started to swim!! Albeit, a little slow at first but he soon swam a little faster. There was fuzz stuck to him from being on the floor of the car for 6 minutes, but that should hopefully come off of him.

The fish in the tank started to hide and then nip at each other, my brother said his fish never did that much, but it must be because of the new fish being in there.

Anyhow, we turned the lights out and he started to swim with the other danio, he got nipped a few times, but was alright. I am now home, but I will phone to check and see if he is still doing good.

What a ride for that poor guy, I think next time I will use a bag instead of doing it the way I did.

My question is, how did he live for so long without water, and then only a small few drops of water? Simply amazing. I'm glad he's safe now.

haha! Sounds like pure chaos!

I suppose that's one reason most of us use bags

actually, some fish can survive a decently long time out of water. my african butterfly fish jumped out of my tank and survived for a good hour or so outside of water since i was at work during the day. he was shooken up when i put him back in, but actually turned out alright...for a bit.

he died the next day from stress/something bit his feelers and fins off the back, and im still unsure of who did it judging i only had neons, a ram, a red eye tetra and a cherry barb at the time.

good story though ;D

My crayfish escaped when I was sleeping, not sure how long he was out of the water for, but I put him back in, he seemed fine, but a couple hours later his claws fell off. Couple minutes later he was floating at the top of the tank, not dead but barely alive, he would move his small pincers every once in a while. Few minutes later the other fish was eating him, and then he died.

Not as amazing as your story, good thing you didnt get pulled over by the cops for speeding. Im glad hes ok

The speed limit on the Yellowhead trail (which goes right across Canada) is 70km in the city, I was going 110. I had an emergency on my hands, hope the cop would understand.

I just got my BN pleco's today.. i was drip acclimating them and when I turned my back on the container the cat ran out and knocked it over...
I heard a thud and splash and came running to find baby BN's flopping around on the carpet with the cat just sitting there starting at them.

At least the cat never ate them! Good cat!

I was doing a revamp on my 55 gal and had taken everything out...decor, plants, rocks, log....and couldn't find my bumble bee catfish. I assumed he had died and was eaten. The next day I was looking at the tank and I glanced over at the tub I had put all of the stuff in the night before as I took it out of the tank and I saw something dark and funny looking laying on a plastic bag. On closer inspection I discovered my bumble bee laying in a tiny puddle of water (not even enough to cover him, just enough to keep him moist). Looking closer I saw he was still alive so I put him back in the tank. He had survived all night on that damp bag and is still happy and healthy several months later.
