Default clean up crew

Im thinking of getting a fish to help keep my substrate/tank clean. I have a 10 gallon with 4 female platies and 2 male platies. I have the common gravel substrate.

anyone have any suggestions as to what I should get? or not get?

4-5 smaller corys should work fine.

6 platys is about 12 inches of fish which over stokes your ten gallon so cories are out. snails are a good but my friend had a snail that got big and ate her fish. shrimp sound fine and have a small bio-load

I seriously doubt the snail killed a fish, most likely the fish died, and the snail was eating its remains.

Malaysian Trumpet snails. Stay small, are live bearers but do multiply quickly if given enough to eat but can be easily controlled. They dig through the gravel and eat left over food. You can get them for free at most LFSs. Or some Japanese Trapdoor snails, also live bearers but multiply very slowly, They will eat left overs on the gravel and remove some algae on the walls and decor. Easier to keep IMO then applesnails. My three have had 4 babies in the since January and all are still alive. I have had poor results with applesnails, since my water is soft but these guys seem to do ok in it.

ok thanks for the info guys. I have 3 ghost shrimp already which seem to do a fair job. I think im just going to stick with them seeing as how im raising two more fry for my tank. I was hoping to get cories, but i wouldn't want an unhappy few in my tank. SInce im already close to overstocking
I suppose this is how the fish tank population explodes for fish keepers, lol

I was thinking of getting a male betta for my tank to help eat the fry.. gotta keep em in check somehow.. so i dont get a population explosion. And may also make a healthy betta I can really only afford to raise so many with overstocking in mind. I think one of my friends would take some of my platys after seeing and hearing about them. well thats where my tank is headed.

good idea with the betta?

Well a betta could go if the water is just slightly alkalinous and not too hard. Altough platys are sometimes fin nippers and if you have male guppys with fantails the betta cab attack them.
