What are the ammonia and nitrite levels, what other fish do you have and is the tank cycled?
We can't really be of much help without knowing what the water is like.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

I'd agree with CichlidMan. PH,NH3,No2,No3 are key to helping as well as what type of eel it is, how old he/she is and tankmates.

actually what you have is a FISH not an eel !!! It is most definately SUFFERING from AMMONIA POISONING! Please do an immediate water change and use some amquel after that to be sure! I hope that ten gallon was cycled first...BUY AND USE SOME TEST KITS!!!!

i wnet to the city yesterday and went to a fish store and the guy there said it was a type of loach and that if there wasnt adequate hiding places it would lay on its side and turn pale to pretend being sick. there werent any hiding places in that tank so i moved it to another tank and it is doing fine now. thanks for your help anyway.
