Default Light Strip Failure

Well, I got home last nite, and tried to light my 55 gallon, but it remained dark. The strip was warm to the touch in the ballast area, but otherwise got no hint that it was even trying to light up. I switched bulbs out (even though it was a recent bulb), and the most I saw was a small orange glow on one end. I took a look at the ballast and it looked pretty corroded. Has anyone had experience with this, if the ballast is at fault, where can I find one, and is the replacemet cost more than a new strip light, which I have priced out at $50. I am really leaning towards replacing it, because there is corrosion elsewhere, and I am not to keen on burning my house down. I have to admit, I don't know to much about these, so any help is appreciated. Thanks M.M.

Any hardware store should carry electronic ballasts. For instance lowes carries them as well as home depot. You're looking for one that has enough wattage to replace the one you have. They run anywhere from 25-35 dollars.
