by putting 1 male with 4 females, you will get 4 times as many babies.it will be kind of like a population explosion.
a platy is a platy is a platy..same fish;different color.just like all of the thousands of variations of guppies..they are still guppies...

With any livebearer, it is advisable to keep three to four females for every male to start out.
In terms of breeding probability, yeah, almost any kind of platy will breed, but it is easiest in my experience to get similar looking ones to breed.

e3:
I am completely certain that they will mate.
As set forth previously by others please purchase at least three females and preferably four.
If you only purchase two females will you soon ascertain why the folks were advising you to purchase three or four.

That should work out fine.
If you don't have a good number of females, they basically get beaten up from too much male sexual 'courting.'

You will have lots of fish that might have interesting colors. Unless you have been studying the platy genetics, it is hard to predict the fry colors. What will make it even harder to predict is that the first batch or two of fry from each female will probably be the result of breeding before you got those females.
When it comes to platies breeding, the platies will almost completely ignore the color of the females they are placed with. There has been some research done that both the females and the males prefer the color of wild fish to the ones that we find in our tanks but the chances of having any wild colored platies is very small indeed.
