today i was watching my fish swim around and i turn around for 5 seconds to give my brother something and when i turn back i count the fish and i'm one short. Roscoe my guppy is gone. I begin to search for him. He sometimes hides behind the heater or in the gravel but it looks like he just up and vanished. As i look to my filter i see his body hanging out of the intake tube his large tail be ripped throuth the strainer. Out of instinct i grab the intake tube and rip it off the filter and he falls out...dead. I keep staring in disbelif half of me understands while the other half is torn in disbelif and the hope he'll start to swim agian. But that moment never comes. i net out his small body and wrap him in a napkin and print on it RIP Roscoe. I restart the filte and walk outside with my shovel choking back tears and bury him next to the banks of our pond were he'd be near water he would've like that and cross two sticks over it as a grave marker.
Now it is bad enough i lost my fish but through an act of cruel fate my fish dies less then a hour after my dog was put down. Sounds like a bad day huh?

yea that is a bad day. sorry about your loses. thats the reasons why i RARELY use filters after that happened to me a couple of times. FIRST time half the tube got knocked off somehow or probaly loose and than 2 of my guppys got sucked in. i was at school at the moment so i couldnt save them. got home disappointed since they were my favorite since one was a neon blue and black looking guppy and other was neon red and black. scales turn kinda shiny in the light. learned it was by cross breeding tetras and guppys. the second time i was there when it happened, stupid tube fell out again. it only been a minute and i got him out but i knew he was gona die soon. the filter was to strong and bend his body in a U shape. i just let it live thinking how us ppl would like to live as long as possible in the world. after that time i REALLY threw the filter out the window into my backyard angry that it was my fault (since i didnt get rid of it the first time it happened). after that i only used the filter to mix chemicals into the water faster. other than that i dont use it for cleaning the water. i let nature do all that for 2 months

you might want to cover your intake with a sponge to prevent this from happening!

Everyone loses fish mate, live and learn as they say, so it won't happen again.
Your dog .... that's another story. Sorry for that man, it sucks. |

my dog lost her battle with cancer. The cancer was so big on her neck it was choking her. Soon she couldn't even walk and i had to carrie her around our house. It wasn't fair that we let her live like that. I am more sad about the dog because i've had her since i was 3 but I understood that she had to go but my fish was an acident. Today i woke up to find my new betta suffered the same fate as my guppy and died plus 1 of ghost shrimps died so i did a 50% water change and promised myself to be more careful

It may not be the filters fault, what are your water perameters, how big is the tank, what is in there?

By the way Fishboy talk's bout Rosco I don't think the water was so bad, that the fish threw himself to his death. But then again maybe he was distraught, over an old flame

So far in my life I have had to put 3 dogs down. 1 of them I had for 19 years. They definitally become part of the family. The joy tand memories they bring through the years are worth the pain in the end. Remember to look at the good times and it will let you know the right thing was done.
As far as fish go - Usually when they get pulled into the side of a filter it usually means they were somewhat weak to start with. Healthy fish dont ususally die by getting sucked aginst the tube. |

Only answer to that mate is a new fish and a new dog, when you get older like me you will have a few of these friends to see you through life. Last time it happened to me, the wife had to have a dog too because the other one didnt like her as much as me. I have three graves in the garden & I still say hello when I mow the lawn.
