Default Feeding Question

Hi, I have a basic question about feeding.

When I wake up in the morning it's completely dark outside, and it's nowhere near fully light by the time that I leave for work. I've been feeding my two tanks twice per day, once in the morning before I leave, and once in the evening.

In the morning when it is so dark, most of the fish are sleeping/hiding out. I've been turning on the lights for 10-15 min. before I feed them because if I don't, not everyone comes out to eat. Is that putting any unnecessary stress on the fish by "waking them up" to feed, or would it be better to just leave the lights out, feed, and not have everyone eat?

if you feel like you want to keep the morning feeding you could try turning on lights slowly to simulate the sun coming up... like turning on a hall light or room next to where the tank is, then a few min later turning on the room light... if it' has dimmer setting, maybe a bit a time, working your way up to turning on the tank light.

I know that when I have accidently turned the tank on in the morning when it's still dark, my fish totally freak out. Rude awakening. lol. I'd imagine it is causing some stress though.

Thanks, Gracie. I don't have a dimmer setting, just some bright lamps. I have been trying to turn the hall light on first, I think I'll try to leave the hall light on a little longer before I turn the tank lights on.

try the room light a few min after the hall light. or does you husband leave later than you? maybe he could just take over the morning feeding?

My husband works nights and since I leave before dark he does the morning fish stuff and I do night.

I leave the latest, we both have to leave super early every morning. Besides, when he does feed I usually have to yell at him for overfeeding. If it wasn't for me trying to research and learn as much as possible, we'd be in big trouble.

Beleive me, if they're hungry enough, they won't mind waking up.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

haha i second that. we get up very early too, and we usually leave the light on for about a half hour, thats enough time for them all to wake up, and then we usually feed.
