Default Algea

Is it really important, for Balloon Mollies, and Guppies and a Rubberlipped pleco to have Fresh Algea, or are Algea Waffers alright?

As long as they have a substitute like algae wafers or other green foods then they should be well nurished. Mollies and guppies don't need as much green foods as plecs though, usually flake foods has just enough green foods for them, but obviously the more variation the better.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

Many of the mixes of flake food on the market contain some greens. There are also frozen greens on the market - Emerald entree by San Fransisco Bay Brand. They contain natural greens like kelp and algae.
