our lfs has this fish, and they are also unsure of what type it is. it has the spots like a texas cichlid, and has the colors of a jewel cichlid, any ideas?

Jewels have spots, too. Could you give us a better description? How big is it? What shape does it have, jewel-like or texas-like?
Are you saying it's a big cichlid with big pointy fins and it's red, or is it a small cichlid which is red with lots of blue spots?
