I have a 20 gal with 4 glolights (used to be 6 but 2 passed away a little while ago). Not wanting to get any more I did not build up the school again. But since they are the only fish in this tank with a BN pleco and 3 L174 plecos they feel pretty secure in there. Today I went to my LFS to buy some stuff and could not resist looking at the fish as well. In one tank they had an at least 4"+ comet goldfish with a very young Von Rio tetra. They advertised 3 of them for $6, I believe. But there was only one left. I ask why the goldfish was in there (thinking they probably could not sell the last of them and wanted the goldfish to eat the remaining few and he was down to one). But the clerk said the goldfish was put in there because they have a hugh snail problem, which was in fact the case and I noticed several other tanks where a goldfish was added to eat the snails. However, the goldfish in this tank was more interested in eating the tiny tetra, who constantly tarted into a fake plant to get away.
Of course I could not resist and bought him. I put him in the tank with my glolights and so far all seems well. He even seems to school with them but that may just be a fear reaction right now. It's only been a few hours. Will they school together? Could they breed with each other? Both reach about the same size and are similar in body form but totally different in coloration. |
