Question Biowheel

I have a Penguin (or is it Marineland) hanging filter with a biowheel. I have been breaking down my tank over several days in preparation for a move (no fish left to be transported) so my biowheel has dried out. I know they sell replacements, but you want to use your old one b/c of healthy bacteria. But since mine has dried out, should I just pitch it?

I think your bacteria is gone, but everyting I have ever read has said to only replace the bio-wheel if it becomes damaged.

yeah, the bacteria is definately dead. wash it off real good, or replace the wheel. dead bacteria can cause some problems.

Reusing it is fine just do as already stated and give it a good rinse and it should be fine.

The decaying dead bacteria is going to cause a sharp rise in ammonia. On the other hand, if you are breaking down the tank and rebuilding and recycling when you get to the new location, you should just give the biowheel a good rinse and you should be ok. The dead bacteria will finish decaying and the ammonia will dissapear after you're finished cycling.
