I recently upgraded to a 55 about a week and a half ago and the transition is not going as smoothly as I hoped. For starters, I wasnt able to run my old filter at the same time as my new one because the filter did not fit on the tank. I was forced to put its media in the aquaclear 110 (new filter) and hope this along with the gravel and decorations from the old tank would atleast keep the ammonia low and aid in a quick cycle. I couldnt leave the old tank run until the new tank fully cycled because of space constraints. I know I should have thought about this scenario ahead of time but I thought the old filter would work with the new tank.
During the first week, I managed to keep ammonia at about .25 to .5 with daily water changes and had 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates. During this time, I lost 1 rasbora and a cory. Fish would also not eat at this time. So by the end of the week, I decided to go to my lfs and buy tetra safe start which was a product many people seem to recommend on many forums. 2 days later I had 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 5 nitrates. For about 5 days now, these readings have remained consistent and have lead me to believe my tank is out of the red now and cycled? The problem is my fish still dont eat. The pearl gourami doesnt eat at all, the remaining cories dont eat, the remaining rasboras and cherry barbs are the most puzzling aspect of this situation. They continue to spit out flake food yet ate the frozen blood worms i offered yesterday. These are the same flakes I offered them when they were in the old tank. The only fish that has ate through this entire process is the simese algae eater. All of these fish are from my old tank. My question is what can I do and what is wrong? I know I will probably lose more fish but I am trying to save as many as possible. Sorry this is so long and thank you for your help.
If they don't eat, skip a day or two of feeding. Stressed fish will often skip eating and feeding just pollutes the tank. They should calm down and start begging for food in a day or two. Keep the water quality up and don't worry about food, they won't starve in a week with no food.
Give us more details. Used tank or new? (could you have introduced a disease?). Is the water different? The decor? The light?
its a used tank that hasnt been occupied for over a year..I cleaned it out just with water before I did anything. The water is from the same source as the previous tank, unless filling it up from the hose on the side of the house and not from the sink is considered different? There are a few new rocks and plants but i cleaned them with water also before I put them in the tank. I really have no idea what it could be if my water parameters are fine. The temp is at 78F
