hi, I have recently got a second hand filter, it is a box filter, witha chamber for filter floss, where does the bacteria build up?
Also would this be enough for a 47 gallon with 3 leopard bush fish, and 1 marbled bichir, |

Well, IMO, No it would not be big anough to filter the tank like it should be, It would have to be a pretty big box filter for a tank that big.
I would think it would prolly work ok to a minumal aspect of it, but, I would imagen it would max out on the bateria needed to keep the tank going "the cycle" I would run that if you had noting else to use as a temp untell you could get a filter that s more siutable for the size tank. I'm sure some others can explain this better...... |

it is a decent size, it is about 10" chamber, cylindrical, I can get a better filter a few weeks after the tank is up and running, (cycling)
it was just that I can't get the tank running for another month or so, and I still have to buy the tank, I was going to put it in my community to get it running, but how much would it cost to get a decent filter for that tank? |

it depends on what filter you want, on how much it would cost you. im sure other people here will help you out alot more than i can, personally i like the hot magnums, i havent tried half of the filters here that others have.

filter has to support the tank size and the bioload of the fish you're going to have in the long run.
fishfreak has made a great suggestions with the H.O.T. magnum, if you've got budget restraints. it's a canister filter that hangs on the back of the tank, and there's an optional bio wheel 30 to help with biological filtration. I've seen this pro system set up recently online for about 50 bucks. 40ish for the filter alone. I paid around 90 bucks back in the day. I recently got a couple of Fluval 404's for 95bucks a pop. C I had one on a 55 gallon with 2 cichlids, and it worked fine. |

"where does the bacteria build up?"
any and all surfaces. the nitrifying bacteria grows best at levels of 80% dissolved oxygen, and your filter is the most aerated. |

The filter depends on two things water flow rate and surface area in the filter.
