Default Filter Capacity

Hi! Ok, so could a 50 gallon filter work well with my 55 gallon tank?

I agree with redhead it can be done but you will have to change water more frequently and more of it. all in all it is worth a better filter

If you have two 50g filters that would work. But a single hob filter will not keep the tank clean.

I'm also going to guess that the filter is rated up to 50g witch means it would be good for a 30g I always like to use filters for two times the size of the tank. That way it stays clean and your room is not going to smell like gross fish water.

Ok, thank you for those responses. The filter that came with my tank was a freaking 50 gallon filter. I guess I will have to buy a bigger one. Could a 50 gallon filter work with a 10 gallon tank? I don't think so but I am just curious.

just my opinion on this.....
i never use a filter on a tank that it is rated for...in fact ; i ignore the tank size rating and go strictly by the GPH rating...for a 55 gallon tank the minimum size filter would be an aquaclear 110 that is rated at 428 GPH...
i like to have a turnover rate of 10X per hour...
there are a lot of people that will disagree but that would be ok for them but not for me....i prefer the extra filtration...

10 gallon..nothing but air

10 gallon...just more air

10 gallon...stale air

just don't ask about the rest

My 55g with the two filters =680gph witch means in one hour it filtrates the tank 12.36 times.

It stays pretty clean.

My only problem, keeping the tank topped off. I think I gotta make one of them fancy auto top offs.

Extra filtration would definitely be better. So could a 50 filter work for a 10 gallon tank?

Depends on your fish. If you have a betta in there it will definetly not work. The fish in the 10 gallon have to be able to cope with the strong flowrate of the filter.

Oh ya, a betta would hate that filter. We were thinking about getting 5 cherry barbs, 1 molly, 2 otos, and 1 mystery snail. Would that work?

On my ten gallon tanks I have 20g filters and on one I have a 10-15g small filter for angel fish. Another has a sponge filter that I'm hoping to use if any of the fish get prego/ hospital tank.

my 10g has 20g filter, my 30g has a filter for 60g and my 50 has a filter rated for 100g. its always good to do a double of the filter but at the same time remember that not all fish can stand heavy current so its best to research what fish are going in the tank all my fish like strong currents so catfish spend have the day swimming up the filters flow but stuff liek angels guppies and certain tetras tend to do better in tanks with less current

I tend to share lohachata's and Redhead305's approach to filtration...more is usually better (of course, you have to be careful with species that don't do well with a lot of water movement). I aim for a turnover of at least 10X per hour...and often exceed that. For example, on my 75 gallon tank, I'm running 2 Aquaclear 110's, and a couple sponge filters (which is probably closer to 12-15X per hour). On my 40 gallon: an Aquaclear 110 and 2 sponge filters. 29 gallon: Aquaclear 70 and a sponge filter. They stay crystal clear.
