as im sure yall know, hurricane dennis is about to hit florida, or so theyve predictedswo im wondering if anyone has any tipson how to take care of my fish? we dont have a generator or a battery power thing hooked up to my aquarium so im a little lost on how i can keep oxygen in the water
i heard that if every so often you disturb the top of the water that will put oxygen in, that makes since to me, my oscar ((puppy)) was the only fish of mine to survive hurricane ivan ((i almost named him ivan cuz of that, but i dont liek that name)) because i didnt know much about fish and wasnt really attached to them so they werent really on my mind, but now he is! i assume that because the water is supposed to be boiled before humans drink it, that it isnt healthy for animals either thanks for any help!!!

FOr sure go get urself a battery operated pump and lots of batteries, wasn't florida knocked out for couple weeks last year from hurricane? Loses more likely happen then since well keep tank warm dont think that should be a problem.
Go get one of them big storage containers from wal-mart and fill it up and treat the water and just let it sit covered that can be for water changes, get a sponge filter i should have said with the airstone battery pump, filter ur tank still then..

yeah we got it pretty bad last time... the roads are kinda dangerous ((lots of wacko people)) so im not gonna go out again till the hurricane passes and everyone is closing down anyways, im sure the pet stores are gonna be closed tomorrow. there is no way possible that i think i could get my hands on any more batteries, i think my area is out of them by now. and im kinda scared to go to wal mart with all these crazy people freaking out
... by next hurricane i will be sure to be more prepared, but this time im just not during ivan i think i was without power for like 6 to 10 days, i cant really remember, but i had an 10g with my oscar, when he was TINY, a baby columbian shark, and an lil angelfish... the oscar was the only one to still be alive after we got power back, i didnt even think of checking on them so what im looking for is like manual tips to take care of my fish, that doesnt require any kind of power, thanks though

Air exchange is done at the surface. Bubblers only add oxygen because they disrupt the surface of the water creating better oxygen exchange.
So for now you can remove the cover and let air flow across the top of the water better. Just be sure you dont have any jumping fish. In the future battery operated air bubblers are only about $5-$10 so they shouldnt break the bank for the security of your fish. |

Another thing you could have tried is to get a "egg crate" flourcent light cover. to cover the tank. This will allow air flow while keeping larger fish from jumping out. |
