Well I bought fish on what? Saturday. And now all 5 of my black neon tetras are dead, from the one tank with the loach. 2 of them were older. Then in my other tank 6 of my new neon tetras died, along with the 3 rosy barbs. I think in the one tank I aded too many too quickly. BUT In the tank w/ the loach, I only added 3 new fish. Which were Black Neon Tetras. I hope it's not the place I bought them from. And I hope the rest of my fish don't die! I tested the water and all of it is ok. I was doing water changes because the Nitrate and Nitrites were higher. But I got it to where I was doing real good. So... Do you think I should add more fish? I like Neon Tetras. But I thought my Gourami would eat them but he didn't they just died and the corpses were plucked at.... :: Sigh :: I went through a season(2 weeks) of not losing fish and now it's over ;_;! Thanks for any help.

In my past experience any of the Neon Tetra type fish are not very hardy. If you are having an issue with fish dieing that's the last type I'd add. Danios are a hardy small fish that you might want to consider.

If either tank is showing NitrItes, your tnk is not ready for ANY fish, let alone neons. Let the tank finish its mini-cycle (or complete its cycle to begn with). Then add fish. Neons are not hardy and genetically bred neons are even more delicate. It could also be your fish store. Never buy non-hardy fish the first week they come in. If they make it a week in the lfs, then consider adding them to your quarantine tank for another week. If they still survive, add them to your tank.

I've had these fish tanks for a while, and I know cycling can take a while. Maybe it was the sea salt? Do Tetras not like Sea Salt? lmao.
I've seen danios and am not fairly interested in them. Do you think I could add more Fancy Male Guppies into my one tank? I think I'm going to move the Chinese Algae Eater to my other 10 gallon tank. Is it true when they get bigger they become agressive and eat your other fish???? If so I'm probably going to see if the fish store will take him.

I'm not sure on the guppies, I personally have never raised them before. Chinese Algae Eaters are fairly aggressive... Not everyone will agree because in the past they have had a docile one, but for the most part they will nip and pick on other fish. |

If it had sea salt in that tank, that is what killed them, and if that is the ase, maybe you should do some reading before you try killing anything else.......
Neons are by far a new tank fish, they really need to go into a tank that has been up and running for some time to have a fair chance.. |

Anyways, Nowhere had I read that sea salt would kill them, and YES I did do some reading. Black Neon Tetras need/want frequent water changes. Both of the tanks have plants in them. I think that they came from a bad fish store. The old Neon tetras were from there, so maybe when I put them in maybe they had whatever the other ones had. The other fish are fine and show no signs of bad health. So, I guess I'll be buying from Petsmart again. I trusted the petstore before, but they only have a 48 hr. insurance thingy. :: sigh :: ah well!

sea salt is definately toxic to neons if you put it in... nitrite is too so it may have been a combination of the two. If you want to use salt... don't use sea salt, use aquarium salt. Sea salt changes your pH. I've kept neon tetras with a table spoon of aquarium salt per 10 gallons in my tank without a problem.

Ugh, I meant the kind you buy at Wal-Mart isn't that Aquarium Salt? I didn't mean cooking, Sea Salt. It just says Sea Salt on the thing. So isn't the Wal-Mart 'Sea Salt' the same thing as 'Aquarium Salt'?

I'm not sure if it is or isn't. But to be honest, most salt is the same with a few different elements. With tetras, no salt is perferred though they can handle some. Its not needed. As for the guppies, they perfer harder water so salt is beneficial. If you're not going to add more neons, keep up with your regiment. Tetras (most) do not like hard water with salt and are sensative to meds. It is possible that the new ones were not healthy to begin with. You have to be careful about buying tetras from lfs. In any case now you know and you can decide what you want to add from here. Hope this helps.

Thanks Simpte. I think I'll buy more guppies and leave it at that for now. Thanks for all the help! I really just wanted to know if my other fish had the possiblity of dying. I've also heard that if neons have lived in a LARGE group (like 32+) and are moved to a small pack (6-10) they tend to not fair well because of the changes. I'm not sure it's just what I've heard. Thanks again for all the help! I appreciate it.
