Default Does your sand turn black?

Question for the sandy bottom keepers: does your sand ever turn black from the current? I'm sure it's not a bad thing... I just stir it up and it goes away. Just wondering.

i really didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I use the play sand bought at home depot, and I only have very little (was going to get stingrays) but plan on getting some more. I'm now contemplating getting sand from a LFS.

I use playsand in a 125 gallon tank, and my sand never has problems with turning colors. (btw, the color to black is due to anaerobic bacteria that breed in low oxygen conditions. The reason the sand turns black is the gas they release while digesting, and it is also toxic to fish.)

I have quite a few different things in my tank that help churn the sand over and keep it aerated. Cory's do a good job for one, I have Malasian trumpet snails that help as well, and finally about a dozen FW clams that dig around in there and help too.

Exactly all sand in my tanks are play sand from HD, even with my peacock tanks that rarely touch the sand, still doesnt turn black, light shift when gravel vaccum works good, but if u have so little that's weird, is ur water becoming well oxygenated?

My water pump will shoot bubbles for about 3-4 days when i shut it off to service my UV, and I maintain it once a week.

I examined my tank thouroughly when putting everything back together after my DIY backround. I couldn't find any blackened sand, but I removed my powerhead that was causing it a few weeks ago. AquaClear 400gph PH... It would create a lot of current so i aimed it at the glass at a 45 degree angle, then it started to move the sand away from the front of the glass... which is where my sand started to blacken. No signs of it since I removed the power head, but i'm going to do a DIY CO2 system, and I'm going to use a powerhead to distribute it, i guess i should get a smaller gph before i do.

Since there's no need in starting another SAND thread and this one is already well established, I just had 1 questions or 2. Is there a larger grained sand avaible at lowe's or Hd, i bought normal sand there for for terrarium, and it took FORever to hose off all the dust and smaller particles. Sorry for stealing this thread kinda

I believe the larger is silica not sand not sure, but just the price we pay for buying from HD and not $20-$30 for 20-25lbs of sand at LFS lol.
