I have some Hatchets in my 20 gallon tank during the day when the lights are on they float there and kind of swim, BUT at night when I turn the lights off they all go nuts and just start swimming around. Its almost like they like the lights off. I was thinking about adding floating plants to kind of break up the light but these fish do hover at the top and i would think they would get in the way. Does anyone know what I could do or whats going on?

Well from my experience, and from what my LFS clerk said "if you don't have live plants then you dont need to leave the light on for that long". I asked him because I suddenly had a huge amount of algae all over the walls and water was cloudy. And now I dont have that problem for the past 6 months. I only keep my lights on from 5pm to 10pm. BUT i bought an auto-time light, so it does it for me.
My only advice can be (and would love people to prove me wrong) try to keep a steady time of when you keep your light on. If you can't than invest in an auto light timer, they cost about 20$. If you also see that they still dont swim as much try to lower the amount of time the light is on. It could be just that. |

To keep an all around healthy balanced tank, fish need a cycle of light 10-12 hours a day, to simulate a natural environment, and in some fish it promotes brighter and more intense coloring. Sunrise to sunset is the best way to set your timers, and I've seen timers as cheap as 5 bucks.
Floating plants won't hurt, your fishes will probaby comb in and out of them. Just don't cover the whole surface area with them, at the most I'd recommend covering 1/3 of the surface. |
