Default Stocking an African Biotope

I've finally decided on what to do with my old frog tank. AFRICAN ODDBALLS!
Now I need some help on stocking. It's a 40 breeder. (45 gallons. measures 36L.18W.16H)
Fish i currently own that I am moving into it are:
3 juv. Spotted leaf fish (grow to 4-5")
1 young glass knife fish as a sub. for a larger African knife species.(grows to 16". will eventually be upgraded)
(these are slender fish, so they put a bit less bioload on the tank. the knife fish is mostly tail.)
Is there room to add single smaller species of FW Pipe fish and a single african butterfly?
also, this may or may not be pushing it, but i would like some sort of bottom feeder other than snails. suggestions
I plan on this tank being at least moderately planted, if not more.
Can some one help me out?

I would say any Knifefish. I am partial to the Black Ghost Knife of course, but they are found in South America. Why not go with the African Brown Knife or the African Clown Knife. Be wary though as the Clown Knife can get extremely large compared to the Ghost Knife and Brown Knife.

Here's a link on each:

Oh, I see now. If it were possible I would have a tank of nothing buy Knife Fish, but in the real world they would tear each other up in a home aquarium.
