Default Angelfish size to calculate stock

Hi:

I am setting up my new tank and I'm calculating the maximum size of my fish in order to have an idea of inches per gallon.

How much should I count for my angels? The maximum size is 6", but do I have to take the tails into account or only the body?

My tank looks empty, but according to the inch per gallon calculation, I'm already overstocked.

I'm planning to bring my pleco back to the store since he'll definitely grow too big and he doesn't ever show himself anyway...

Sylvia

3 full grown angels wont fit in a 30G with other fish. I have 2 almost full grown in a 55g and they are huge, the size of my hand they take up a lot of space. I know people keep breeding pairs in 30g talls and they are fine but I believe they are kept to themselves. I now have 4 angels in a 55 and am worried about fighting and about their size once the little ones are grown.

are you keeping them in the 30 or are they going in a bigger tank?

They will be staying in this tank.

I was just thinking to add a couple of swordtails.
That would be nice. Would that work?

The inch per gallon rule isnt really the best way to see how many fish are too many. Just a quick example; 10 1 inch neons in a 10 gallon would be good. On the other hand 1 10inch oscar would most definitely NOT be good. The longer fish get, the thicker and/or taller they get also, so you need to take in account for that too. Instead of just looking at total length, look at adult total body mass.

the bioload also needs to be taken into consideration.

Just remember that every fish has it own water requirements. For example angelfish needs soft, acidid water. Swordtail prefers the opposite, so they are not the best tankmates.
Angelfish grows up to 6-7 inches, and need a very tall tank, the minimum is 17-18 inches tall tank.

Why not some larger tetras, or something the perfers the same water conditions your angels would like?

it would be better if you just want angels to just keep 2 angels in the 30 gallon because if you get lucky and you get a breeding pair nothing else will be able to live in the tank the pair will kill it and a regular 30 gallon tank is enough for 2 angels, a 20 high would be enough even angels only need 5 gallons of water when they are fully grown if you want some more info read this site http://www.angelsplus.com/AllAboutAngelfish.htm it will tell you everything you need to know

I don't think I ever test for water softness / acidity.
I test pH, which is 7.5, NH3NH4 which is 0 and nitrates which is 0.

a low pH usually means low alkalinity. 7.5 probably reflects a somewhat low alkalinity, although a test would be more accurate. Hardness you would also need to test. Most lfs's will test water for free.

I've heard the males are semi-aggressive, they can get quite territorial and nippy. But it's your call really.

3 angels dont belong in a 30- eventually there will be fewer most likely. Angels just love sword fry too.
