Default Green Water algae

Finished cycling the 55 gallon during the first week of September, so it is newly established. It had green water, but I did a 10% water change and it cleared up a bit. I remember htis happening to my old 29 gallon when it was new, I can't remember how I got rid of it for good, as my 29 gallon has had crystal clear water for the past year atleast. Anhyone know how to prevent this green water from occuring?

Reduce excess nutrients in the water. It will clear up on its own. Waterchanges will not help. Use a uv filter or diatom filter if you are in a hurry. Greenwater doesn't hurt anything.

The excess nutrients in the water are probably phosophates, doing what was already mentioned will probably help.

exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

Well I have about 8 bunches of anacharis, I am just making more bunches with the clippings as they grow, It will eventually be moderately planted. I guess I'll wait for it to clear up.

if it cramps your style, just add accu-clear it will clear your water although it won't solve the problem

a quick fix would also be a black out for a few days... although your plants will probably suffer...

I do have accu-clear, but I can't find it at the moment. The cabinet under my 29 gallon is piled up to the top with all aquarium supplies. I did use chemicals to destryoy algae in my 29 gallon, but then It would come back (didn't know much a few years ago). I used accu-clear and algae destroyer. If I find it I will use it, otherwise, will the plants eventually absorb the nutrients that are feeding it?

It is getting worse, much worse. I used 3 doses of accu-clear over 3 days, with no results. The tank is not getting any direct sunlight, so that is ruled out. The lights are on for 12 hours a day, I don't think thats too much. I did a 3 day balck out, with no results, I didn't want to go longer cause of the plants. I can't even see the back of the tank. What could be the problem? If it is possible, what other chemicals can clear it up while I resolve the problem causing it?

12 hrs a day is too much, even for a planted tank.

I reduced it to 10 hours, don't really want to go shorter. The Accu-clear worked after a couple doses over a couple days.
