you could go for community fish, like tetras and for bottom feeders get a nice lot of cory's

Loaches aren't all that common, not as common as tetras and cories anyway. You appreciate loaches, I can tell by your avatar (clowns). How about some other loaches, like kuhli?

Well firstly there is plenty of fish in your tank that don't fit there. You also have schooling fish without schools.
The clown loach will grow too large for a 30 gallon, and they are also schooling fish. 150 gallons/school would be enough. tetras, barbs and both rasbora species are shoalers also, 6 or more is the minimum schoolsize. the rainbow shark also grows rather large(and sometimes aggressive) for your tank. What are your routines, how often do you change the water, etc.?

i change the water weekly.
but i have had all them fish now for over a year and half of them fish have been there since i first started keeping fish. shoaling fish dont have to be seem in shoals thats just when there seen at there best. also if i may add my clown loach is currently at 3.5" and has not grown much because they grow to the size of there enviroment.

well actually they do much better in a school... yeah they don't NEED a school but they should be as we all are trying to be responsible fish keepers here. And proper sized tanks is a huge issue here at Fishforums... read this post and you will get a vibe for how everone feels here. http://www.fishforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2483
also fish don't "grow" to the size of the tank they are in... they get stunted by the other fishes growth inhibitor hormones and it shortens there lifespan... it is by no means humaine, as the fishes insides grow and their outsides dont.

Dez--If I am right, Koi are one of the only fish that "grow to their surroundings." As I have learned from other members here, they emit a hormone. The hormone tells the fish's body to stop growing once the water has enough in it. As far as I know, though, Koi are the only fish that really stop growing when there's not enough room.

dez - in my mind, there is no debate... I and a lot of people here have been doing this longer than you've been alive... I've seen the affects of fish being kept in too small of tanks, so don't take this as a debate because there isn't one... just mearly correcting you. Also we are giving you "examples" of fish for your 30 gallon tank... more of some of the fish and less of others that you currently have.

Koi (and im guessing all fish then) also put out an immune suppressing hormone.
My opinion, scrap the clown loach. halve the number of different kinds of schooling fish and triple the population of each species. |

No, I don't think you would be overstocked if you did what shev said. One example stocking that's in line with what shev suggets is:
1 red fin columbian 1 albino rainbo shark 6 rasbora maculatas 6 cuming's barbs That's definitely not overstocking. |

Nah, in addition to getting rid of the clown loach, we're suggesting that you also get rid of half of your schooling fish species. At the moment you have 4, 5, or 6 different species, depending on whether your unknown fish are schooling fish, and if they are the same kind of schooling fish. So we're suggesting that at the end, you should have 2 or 3 different kinds of schooling fish, and have at least 6 of each of them. So the stocking list I proposed wasn't what you would *add*, but what you would end up with. But that was just a suggestion, only you can decide which of the schooling fish you like best...
