Default Journal: Tank Readings

Wed Nov 2, 2005:
Mostly this journal is for my own benefit, but feel free to make comments as I'm somewhat new to this.

Had my tank filled for about two weeks now. Used bio-spora to cycle and added 3-4 fish daily. Right now it's fairly well stocked. I've been changing about 2 2-gallon buckets of h20 daily. Last night I re-added carbon to my Fluval 404 as I'd been treating w/ Melafix and Rid Ick+ for some problems which seem to have abated. I also added in an extra level of bio-balls and the first chamber has pre-filter media. (first: pre-filter media, second: carbon, third&fourth: bio-balls).

Tank is moderately planted, added 4 micro-sword plants just today. Been waiting and seeing which plants will or will not make it. Having less luck than I thought with Anachris but I think I've been using too much Flourish Excell (which I've stopped using a few days ago and noticed improvement w/ the plants). Tank lighting is 260watts for 125 gallons, little over 2/gallon (low-moderate)

Tested tank tonight and had following results:
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite .5ppm*
Nitrate 5ppm

*oh lord, this should be zero. Will perform increased water changes... what happened w/ bio-spora...???

Took nitrIte levels again this morning .25ppm ...

I continue to make 2 bucket/daily changes to water. (4 gallons/day) - I've read that doing too much can be harmful to the bacteria colonies and kill them off, which wouldn't get me anywhere.. I'm worried that my tank is under-filtrated - I just have a single Fluval 404 (good up to 100 gallons) for my 125 gallon tank but good news - my HOT Magnum 250 just arrived via fedex. I'll have it installed tonight.

You stated the tank has been filled for two weeks now.. and that you are treating for Ick - Is this an old tank that you have cleaned out and are recycling?? Just trying to get an idea of whats going on here..

Tank bought on Ebay, I cleaned it with hot water before putting in substrate, etc.. with the ick, I'd bought an Otto from petco and noticed the next morning he had bad ick.. not sure how I could have missed it when I bought him. He's OK now. I treated my tank with bio-spora to cycle it.

EDIT: I treated the ick w/ Rid Ick+, used 1/2 dosage even though it's supposed to be ok w/ scaleless fish... I have tetras, corys and dojo loaches...

I'll move this over, thanks - but I might wait a few more days as I'm getting good feedback. Once it's just me making boring entires I can take it there. Thanks!

Tested levels this morning: 0ppm.

Was it the added filter or was my tank not fully cycled? Unknown. Will re-test periodically, though.
