K, so I have a 30 gallon tank...in about 6 months or so my sister is moving out of state and I'm "adopting" her 175 gallon tank (yes SUPERSOEXCITED). So anyways, my 30 right now, I have 3 medium clown loaches (possibly the happiest, funniest fish I've ever seen), they're roughly 2.5-3" long each. I have 1 blue gourami, and 3 tertra's, and 1 little tiny baby algae eater. I'm think of adding two small angel fish, 1 more blue gourami, and 5 more tetras. Eventually the loaches and the angels are going to go in my super tank...anyone see any problems in the meantime? This is what I'm want to have after my next trip to the fish store:

the clown loachs grow slow but will reach around a foot each a need to be kept in groups of 6 or more. Gouramis are similar to bettas because the males will fight sometimes to the death. Your tetras will be very happy in a large group. If you have neon tetras though be sure to not upgrade them to the super tank with the angels because when angel's grow large in their natural habitat(the amazon) they enjoy eating their favorite prey, neon tetras. The algea eater will be fine. Good luck with the 175, if it were me I'd get a large oddball...*cough*african lungfish*cough*

So I'm almost positve my gourami right now is a male, are you saying I should get a female so they don't fight? I know the loaches get big, that's why they're going in the super tank eventually, along with the angels, and the tetras won't leave, they love their 30 gallon, and they're not neon, I'm not sure what they are, they reddish, and have very fluffy fins, but they're not neons.

I was leaning towards a female (males usually have more pointed fins) but no way to tell from the pic. When you say algae eater, what kind? There are 100's of species all growing to different sizes and needing different diets and water conditions. The term "algae eater" is one of the worst in the hobby.

I was leaning much more towards male, the top fin is VERY pointed, I don't see why you couldn't tell from this pic, all the fins are displayed clearly, as is the girth of the body, and the general shape of the fish...

Male as far as I can tell. Females fins are shorter and more rounded than that, IME.

I was going to say possibly an oto. She did say it was really small, and it is an algae eater. Does it look like this...

To be honest...I have no idea what kind of algea eaters they are. I've got to get one out. My roomate has a HUUUGE tank...like 8 feet long, and he set it up, and left it alone for like two months, so it grew a slew of disgusting algae. He went to the fish store, and they told him to get four of these "algae eaters" and literally, overnight they CLEANED the tank spotless. I had a little algae problem for a bit, so I grabbed two of 'em to clean my tank. They are machines!!! When I bought the tank (used off some lady) she had two rocks in it. I just assumed they were green. NO, that was algae...because they have slowly been becoming more and more orange. Anyways, yeah I don't know what they are. They're tiny, like 1/4 inch. Super skinny, cylinder shape with really tranclucent fins. kind of whitist, little orangy color to 'em? I dunno. Two is too many though. If 4 cleaned out a 8 foot tank, one will do fine in a 30

oto's yes, chinese algea eaters no... mainly because they aren't suitable for most tanks as they get quite aggressive as they grow up.
