Ok just a week or a little more ago, my discus laid eggs, and the fry actually lived for two days then the parents ate them. Well tonight was really cool cause I was home and actually got to sit by the tank and watch the female lay eggs and the male pass over the top. It was sooooo neat! great experience to watch. Plus I finally know who the female and male are! so thats a bonus. How often will they do this??? Will they keep making babies and eating them? Just wondering, didn't realize they'd do it again so soon.

I don't no the facts but congradulations! Discus breeding is thought of a a high level of tropical freshwater breeding skill, or at least thats what I've read. You aren't really their until they stop eating the broods though

Yeah they are fairly young discus themselves so I don't think they will get it right for a while. But wow it was really neat to watch them actually go through the process. Especially her laying the eggs. And the male gets so vertical while passing across them, that was cool. I hope eventually they live although not sure what to do w/ all those babies. This time there are like 50 or more eggs..last time 29 I think. But again, I never intended on this, although its nice since they are a gorgeous breeding pair.

Wow,
You are doing so good with breeding. I would try one of two things... Once the male does his thing over the eggs, isolate only the female and the eggs by either the tank divider as you've done before, or if the eggs were laid on a heater or removable object, remove the object with the eggs along with the female to a seperate tank. The latter is better if you are serious about it. If you do decide to transfer the eggs and fish to a new tank, use alot of the water from the main tank to keep perameters. The wigglers should feed on the female until big enough for you to feed some kind of a fry formula, hopefuly. Let us know! |

Give the batch to your LFS when they grow, at least maybe some of them; you'll earn!
Congratulations!

WELL DARN, they ate them again.. This time the parents did it, I saw them. I thought they were eating and selecting the nonfertilized but now they've eaten them all. I guess it will take a few trial runs for them to get it right. I am just really glad to know which is the female and male. And maybe soon I will get them their own tank. I never intended on breeding but if it works that will be fabulous!! Thanks for all the encouragement. I will let you know if they EVER get it right and I actually get babies
