Well if I had to guess it's ICH-white spot diesease. You can buy some ICH medicine from your pet store. Here's a good link:

I suggest if it is ich do it the natural way: raiseing temp if that doesn't work put some salt in and that should certainly kill the ich but if u have carbon in ur filter i would take it out.
But it may not be ich. - Jonno |

also, mollies benefit from a little addition of salt to the water, about 1 Tbs per 10 gallons works well for me. this should also help clear up what sounds like ich.

Bang on the nail awsome kid. This is mollies we are talking about, brakish fish! How many times do I have to tell people that mollies won't thrive in fresh water. (Please don't contradict me about mollies living in brakish water, it's happened before you know!)

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

Yup the salt and raising heat thing would work out good like they said.
CM: actually I think mollies are underated because they can live in FW, FW with aquarium salt, BW, or even SW if stepped up slowly(so I hear). |

I put 1 tbsp per 5 gallons, is this too much? That is what it said on the box and I hadn't read this thread about 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. Also, the brakish water will be okay for my swordtails also when I add them in correct?
Thanks! Henry |

Well that amount is fine for the mollies and should be fine for the swords. This isn't brackish water what you have, it's just fresh with aquarium salt(alot of fish can benefit with aquarium salt in FW) to have actual brackish water you gotta use marine salt like you would use for a salt water aquarium. You just add littler so you have a lower specific gravity. But yeah that amounts fine.

I agree with cichlid man on this. Any fish will do the best it can in whatever water you put it in ( doesn't have much choice, does it? ). A mollie can live in pure fresh water, but is that best???? Mollies naturally occur in brackish water. That is in areas where a fresh water river meets the salt water sea. The salinity varys greatly in these areas because of tides, etc. That's why mollies are so flexable. In nature, however, a fish has the ability to swim up or downstream to find comfort. I strongly believe that our fish pets should be kept in water that. as closely as possible, duplicates their natural habitat. It is our responsibility, as hobbyist, to research our pets. And don't expect a pet shop to give accurate info. They will tell you a guppy and an oscar will be fine together. They want to make a sale. BTW, I consider anyone on this forum a responsible hobbyist. We are all asking questions and exchanging ideas.

Hmmm...any idea what I should do with my molly then? I don't have a whole lot of money to buy another tank. The only tank that I have that I could convert to brackish is a 2.5 gallon, and that seems small for such an active creature as my molly. I really don't want to get rid of her because I have had her the longest of all my fish. Any suggestions?
