Default Carbon Cartridges

I have emperor 400 filters on both of my 55g's. Out of curiosity, if you have one, or one similair that has a seperate basket for activated carbon, how often do you change out the carbon?

It's hard to tell. It all depends on the tank bioload and how activated the actual carbon is. You really have to play it by ear, though I would say about once a month in an average setup. I don't use carbon myself in any of my tanks.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

I do not run carbon in any of my 14 tanks unless I need to remove medications. In fact I will often cut open the back frame some in order to remove the carbon before using a new blue cart. But I run planted tanks and carbon does more harm than good in them usually. I really wish Marineland would offer a carbonless version of them.

I agree the use of carbon isn't necessary unless you have used medications.
