Default Filter comparison

Hey everyone we're going to be getting a 20 gallon tank in a couple days. How does an Undergravel filter compare to a Top of the tank filter(idk what you guys refer to them as)? Are there any precautions on what kinda fish can't have undergravel filters? thanks Paul

UGF's aren't very good IMO. I would get a HOB (hang on back) filter.

Undergravel filters are really only a biological filter. In a lot of cases its actually bad to use them as they collect detritus and raise ammonia levels and the like.

HOB filters are a whole lot better and actually provide chemical, mechanical, and biological filtration if you use the right stuff in them.
I suggest getting one with that new bio- fiber stuff. That'll provide biological filtration and you'll be able to remove the filter cartridge without woryying about getting rid of the bacteria.
Just run the filter with the bio-fiber only while it's cycling than introduce the filter cartridge a couple of days before adding the fish.

Yes both are right. I wouldn't get an undergravel filter and they do collect alot of mess under them. Hang-on-back or canister is the way to go. On a 20g I would get a HOB. I just bought a 20g & got a Peguin bio-wheel filter for it. All of the Marineland Peguin & Emperor filters have Bio-Wheels which is a plus, also the Tetra Whisper HOB filter comes with a Bio-Pad that's kinda like the Bio-Wheel.

the whisper brands are way quieter, i have a emperor on one tank and a whisper on the other, the difference is very very big.

Yes indeed it is leveldrummer. I also have a Whisper & a Peguin. I guess they live up to their name. They are cheap also. And if ya'll didn't know the Top Fin brand HOB filters at Petsmart are the same exact as the Whispers except for what it says on the lid and a little cheaper

If you're going to get a HOB filter, get an aquaclear. Better gph, and media is much more versatile.

ive heard good things about the aquaclears, but i got the emperor because of the biowheel feature, when i got all the stuff i was pretty fresh to fish keeping, and i havent gotten a new filter yet, i got the wisper i have when i got a free 55 gal, with fish and lots of other stuff, but it was chipped really bad and i didnt want to risk putting it in an apartment so i gave the tank to a friend,

Bio-wheels and planted aquaria aren't the best of friends.

the theory is that the bacteria on the wheel gets much more oxygen as the wheel rotates out of the water. so you get more and/or better bacteria

That's fine & dandy until the wheels get stuck.
