I opened a new container of fish food from Marineland that says it is suitable for top and mid feeders. The food is in granules and little round discs. I noticed one of the guppies had her mouth wedged open. The round disc thingy was stuck in it. She stayed that way all day and evening-- mouth wedged open. Fortunately next day the disc was gone.
We got out the hammer and crushed the food finer. It is still a bit large in spots-- the old black skirt tetras are having a hard time with some pieces. Should I be softening the food before i put it in the tank? mousey |

I've used & am using that same food and I've never experienced any problems with it getting stuck in their mouth, that was probally just like one in a bunch that it actually got stuck for that long. I've fed it to guppies, platies, & bettas and they can't eat the bigger disc in one gulp but they kind chew on them while they're falling. I think if you crushed it up just a little you should be fine. I personally don't like this food though because it sinks too fast.

It would probably work to soak it first. I do that with sinking pellets I use, and it works fine. That way it is soft enough your fish can pick it apart.

I used to put food into water first... after a while I will release to the tank. But I think we gotta do that when we keep small fish with large, faster fish only, so the smaller fish will get equal amount of food.

I use a pestal and mortar to grind up large pellets for fry.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |
