Default Need some advice

Hi all. I'm going to be moving at the end of the week, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on moving fish and their tanks. I only have a 5 gallon acrylic hex-shaped tank and three fish: 1 mollie, 1 mollie fry, and 1 panda cory.

My thought was to either remove the tank decorations and drain part of the water out, then move the tank with the fish still in there (I'm not going far, just across the apartment complex), or to put my fish in a seperate container, drain some of the water in the tank, and move the tank and fish seperately.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Danielle

If you are just moving a short distance, just leave as much water in there as possible, remove the decor so the fish dont get crushed.

agreed - short distance, small tank - the more water in it the less jostling of the fish - and yes remove the decorations and if you can, cover the tank with a big towel - keeping it dark will reduce the stress on your pets and keep you dry at the same time

when i move a 10 gallon i place the fish in a 5 gallon cooler lined with a trash bag on the inside. I fill the cooler with tank water and pack the tank with half the water, gravel, and decor in the back with the cover removed and replaced with press and seal plastic wrap. A 5 gallon should be easier, just remove decor and leave the fish in it but seal the top.

I was just worried that it's acrylic, and that leaving most of the water in would be too heavy for it. Any thoughts on that?

Thank you for the advice, as well. You are all a great help!

acrylic is stronger than glass enlist the help of a neighbor - if he's a hunk, bat your eyes and smile and say *i need a very strong person to help me move my tank, do you have a few minutes to spare?* (hee hee)

seriously, get someone to help you move it

I would drain half of it out into a big bucket. That will make it lighter and help keep it from spilling so much. Once it's moved you return the water in the bucket.

Put the fish, decorations and half the water in the bucket. Throw away the rest of the water. Refill with fresh water at the new place and you have done your weekly water change also.
