Default tiger barbs

In the first tank I ever had, I had some tiger barbs and cherry barbs. All four fish died due to a power outage. Since that time, however, I have gone through several other types of fish, gouramis, bettas, danios, several types of tetras (everything but neons), etc. While in the petco last weekend, I realized that I still want tiger barbs. As I am planning on doing a 29 gallon for my first apartment a few months from now, I am wondering whether I could do 1-2 of the dwarf cichlids that only grow to 3 inches or so and maybe 7 tiger barbs (4 regular and 3 green? maybe more, depending on space recommendations).

Because the tiger barbs are semi-aggressive, will they work with the cichlids?

Also, if i only have those 9 or so fish in the tank, will space be okay? Should I consider more of other fish? I won't be getting the tank until my birthday in the middle of summer, so I'm just planning right now.
Thanks

They would be fine with the Cichlids. I would do a species tank. 12 of one species or half of each.

It will be ok having a pair of dwarf cichlids and 6 tiger barbs in a 29 gal tank for me. Dwarf cichlids are one of the peaceful cichlids ive known while tiger barbs though semi-aggressive can be peaceful too in schools of 6. Ive read that minimum tank size for tiger barbs is 15 gal and having dwarf cichlids is ok.
