I used one for years and the only problem I had was my Oscar broke them quite regularly.

You mean, you kept SEVERAL for years... since your Oscar kept breaking them... LMAO Just teasing you. But seriously, just think how much you would have saved over the years if you would have bought ONE good quality submersible heater that wouldn't break instead of the several units you had to spend for. Lucky you, you did not kill your oscar by electrocution or or have him get nasty cuts from the broken glass.

Quality of heater is much more important than position. There are good HOB heaters and bad ones. There are good quality submersible ones and bad ones. Pick either from a quality company and you won't have problems. Submersible ones are for visibility reduction and lower waterlines (necessary for some breeding) as well as a tight fitting lid. I use both with no problems. HOB are usually easier to adjust temps with.

LMAO SB, yeah, you are right about that one! This was about 15 years ago and I guess I just never seen a sumbersible heater back then! LOL - The first time I discovered my heater was cracked my Oscar was swimming upside down! He never busted them into pieces - just craked them! But yes, I was very lucky he didnt get hurt!

Hehehe... Oscars are really lil' brats.. but they are so cute. I was cleaning my tank yesterday and as you probably know, I was not having a wonderful day... forumwise... so I left the tank without a top for a while. The lil' brat kept splashig me while I was at my desk... The tank is right next to my desk. When I finially got fed up, I put the canopy on and turn on the light. Mister Oscar was not happy... Daddy did not feed Mister Oscar. So he kept banging against the canopy. What a brat! I have no kids... At least, I thought I didn't. Seems like my wife and I have one!!! He's just a lil' pig with fins!

But WE LOVE HIM!

Cheers!
