IM pretty sure balas get real big - like twice the size or more of what they are now.. loaches too. Personally, I think you have enough fish.

balas get 12-14 inches long, and they should be in a school of 6 or more. they should be kept in nothing less than a 6 foot long tank. they really need the swimming room.
clown loaches get pretty big too, but i've heard they grow slowly. i think your tank is pretty much stocked. you could get rid of some of the bottom dwellers and get some more mid-level fish, or ditch the balas for more of something smaller.

The inch per gallon rule is pretty much useless. Your tank is stocked.
If it were me I would ditch the balas (grow to large and prefer schools of 6 or more) clown loaches (prefer schools of 6 or more) the ropefish its too bad your angelfish is grown, 3 angels would be nice, I would add a few more horseface loaches and then a nice big school of non nippy tetras

thanks everyone, it just kind of makes me sad to see anything i have go away
ill take all ideas into consideration fo show! i love my balas and they seem so happy at the moment. my clowns are also very fun to watch and have great personallity. the rops is cool but he just wiggles around. the angel is golden and absolutly beautiful! the horse...i never see him at all!!! the african butterfly just sits in the corner and sucks! he comes out for food and thats it! pleco is really cool and nice looking. maybe i can also get rid of the butterfly, horseface and rope?....i feel like im on lets make a deal!! |

loaches need groups. when they are in groups they are always out in front in a big loach-pile.
basically, the more secure a fish feels, the more you will see it. that's why you need plenty of hiding places for fish, and schooling fish need schools. the more hiding places you have for the fish, the more they will be out in the open because they know that if they get scared they have somewhere safe to go, so they will feel safer to come out. your horseface loach is probably scared by himself. get him a few friends and they will probably come out more. african butterfly fish are awesome. so long as you don't get anything in the tank thats small enough to fit in his mouth, and that wont nip fins, he could stay. but feed him live foods, that's when he really will shine and is the most fun to watch. they do tend to just sit and wait for food though.

hmm, never thought about getting more horse faces. i like him becuase he stirs the sand but again i never see him (cause hes scared!) i actually thought about taking him back (if i can find him) becuase he is pretty bland in color (clear/white) that would igve me room for a more colorful species. i just posted a huge thread on all my tanks/chemestry and species in hopes i could get some advise on what to do with what i have! hopfully ill get a feww good ideas on how to get more bang for my buck and learn how to better manage what i do have. thanks for the advise!

yes i thought of tetras also but im afraid my balas butterfly and rope fish would gobble them all up. thats a great option when i figure out what im taking back. the main problem i have is most if not all my lfs will not trade/buy fish anymore but you can give them to them which wouldnt be bad if i didnt have them for so long. the balas and rope fish are huge and i know if i give them to the store they will/can sell them for much more then the rest of their stock. just hard to accept!

lol, i was thinking more and more about Boeseman's Rainbowfish! i like those alot!! think they would be good ? also i do have 2 filters on this tank. an Emperior 400 and a Odyssea CFS 4 canister filter. with this much filtration could i over stock a tad bit? (i dont really want to over stock but people are telling me im stocked full now with the amount of fish i do have. the balas being the biggest.i still plan on doing weekly water changes.

you can add some tinfoils in there. They just steal everyone's food.

as much as it pains me i think im going to get rid of my 2 balas before i get anymore attached to them. they are close to 8 inches and i feel they are taking up too much space and will only get bigger! i am also getting rid of my african butterfly and my rope fish.some of these are odd balls which i like but they are just either too big or not personable enough. all i will have left is an angel, 3 clowns 1 horse face and 1 gold nugget pleco. i may also remove the horse face. this will give me plenty of room for a school of rainbow and maybe a few more of something
