I think I spelled that wrong?
Anyways. When you folks do water changes, do you put the declor. in AFTER you put the water in the tank (like in a bucket) or do you put the water in the tank and then Dechlor. ?? I ask, because I'm getting sick of the bucket-hauling ordeal, and I wanna get one of the siphons you hook up to a sink, that sucks it out, then fills it right up, but wouldn't you then be putting chlorinated water in the tank for a bit? Is it okay for just a super short amount of time? |

Any of the cholorine that would touch the tank would kill any of the bacteria in the tank good and bad. Just be sure not to run the filter so you dont kill all of the bacteria in the tank. It would be best to put the dechlorinator in something to mix it up before you pour it in. But thats just my opinion heh.

When I lived where I had to use declorinator, I would add it to the water PRIOR to adding it to the tank

I always add it to the water before putting it in the tank. I couldn't figure out the python thingie either, so never use mine. Besides, hauling buckets is about the only physical exercise I will agree to! LOL

i have a bucket that is ONLY used for fish and i put it in the bathtub, get the temp close out of the faucet, then squirt in some dechlor as the buckets filling up. the dechlor gets swished around while the bucket is filling up from the agitation, and the chlorine never has a chance to get to my bacteria.

I do both ways, some tanks get the bucket w/ dechlor and other tanks(larger ones) I add dechlor to the tank while its filling up with the Python. Its not going to make much, if any, difference. I was very skeptical about it too, but its no big deal. Its never caused a mini-cycle if thats what your worried about. Just to be sure I use a bit more dechlorinator than what is in the directions. If you have very sensitive fish then I would mix prior in the bucket. Other wise don't sweat it.

I have a python, i add it right before the water begins going in. Havent had any problems doing it that way, i make sure the water temp matches the tank temp nearly exactly though.

I put it and all my other chemicals in the bucket before I put it in the tank, just so I can mix them all together, doubt the fish would enjoy me sticking in a stick and swishing it around there home.

I alway use buckets, but it should be ok use the hose. Just add the dechlor to the tank before adding the water and base the dechor dose on the tank size rather that amount of water replaced.

Exactly what EMC said, that's what i do since i use a python, better to be safe then sorry. Now people with homes, i'd be wearry about using a python in the winter time, as micro bubbles are a common problem with that....
Micro bubbles you will need to aerate your water for 24hrs prior to water change.
