Frozen Food Mixture

My new pair of false clowns will be introduced into a tank, a newly cycled tank, next weekend, and in the mean time, i want to buy some types of fish to chop up and get frozen in readyness...

I was looking over the fish monger counter and besides all the normal fish you get there, i was looking at 1) Squid 2) Clams and 3) Raw Prawns...Mixting in a little nori aswell to give it some variety..

Can anybody see any issues with these foods?

Nope, we use them for puffers all the time.

Just buy the Ocean Nutrition Marine Mix it has squid , mysis , brineshrimp etc. It will work out cheaper and saves alot of hassle.

I could do yes Jonno, but i want to provide actually meaty foods for the fish to eat, rather than pre-packaged food that is freeze dried etc etc all the time, want them also to have a good variety of feeds....I dont mind putting the time and effort into preparing these..

Just make sure to smell everything and see if it smells like chlorine or anything funky. If so, soak it in some declorinated water first before freezing. Some fish mongers apparently use some sort of chlorine product to help keep them "fresh."

Thanks for that info Tina...Not heard that one before, so i shall have a good smell of it when i get it all...

You can use frozen foods (they aren't freeze-dried like said etc.), as a staple..but you need to make sure you rinse them thoroughly. When you feed frozen all the time phosphates, nitrates, etc. go up unless you rinse all the "packing juices" out.

Prawns and squid, I use that all the time with my fish. My bichirs (freshwater fish) are mainly fed prawns, shrimp, and frozen feeder fish. Clams and mussels are also a great -snack-. They are filled to the brim with bad juices, so you need to soak and squeeze it out, but it's extremely healthy and fish love it. It doesn't contain some chemical that most other foods have..(I can't remember, but the chemical that it doesn't contain inhibits certain nutrient absorption?).
