Default Weird cycle

This morning I tested my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate to see how far along my cycle is. The other day it seemed to be going quite fine. The ammonia and nitrite had both fallen to 1 ppm and the nitrate was just barley detectable. Then this morning when I go to check the ammonia has dropped to .25 ppm, the nitrite stayed at about 1 ppm, but now the nitrate is around 40 ppm. Will it drop or am I going to have to do a water change before the fish ever go in?

It will eventually drop, just let the cycle run its course. How long have you had the tank set up for? The cycles on both my tanks otok about a months time.

depends on your nutrient export whether you will see lower nitrates, ive seen some people run their tanks with around 40ppm nitrAtes before. water changes will help get it down, but flow and strong skimming will get it down and keep it down, also look for anything that traps detrius, and remove it, that also causes nitrAtes.
