Seahorse Setup

Hey Guys !!

Long time no See , I hope all your tanks are going well !! This site certainly seems alot busier than the time i was last on it !!

I can't believe I had my reeftank setup for nearly 16 months now !! Time fly's when your having fun

Well . . . . .

I got rid of the last of my freshwater fish last week which has left me with a dilemma "4 EMPTY FISH TANKS!

" I have sold 3 of them but have kept a nice 40 gallon(UK) tank which I have setup for a marine setup (currently cycling)

I'm hopeing to keep a pair of seahorses in there as i feel confident that i have the experience to keep them, I currently have in the tank, some live sand, skimmer / canister filter (didn't really want to sump the tank) I'm not going to turn it into a reef tank so I'm just keeping the standard T8 lighting for now (might change them to T5 later on)

I was going to add some live rock from my main tank into this tank do you think alot of the groth on the rock will die off under the T8's or do you think it will be all right ??

I feel the water flow in the tank is fine for seahorses as i know they don't like alot of water movement compared to normal marine fish.

I also know you need to provide objects for them to anchor onto i heard sea fans skeletons do a nice job ?? Anyone any idea where i can get any of this ?? My LFS doesn't seem to stock it.

Do you guys have any pictures of your seahorse setups so i can have a look at the layout so i can visualize how the tank should be aquascaped ??

Hi, 40 gallon sound like a great seahorse setup. LR needs lots of water movment and seahorses dont, so not sure how that works. I have seen loads of seahorse tanks where they have lots of macro algaes and no LR. Since its only 2 fish and 40 gallons of water, you would have lots of options on filteration. LR would be fine under T8s. If you buy silk plants that go all the way to the top of you tank and have them all about that gives them something to hold onto.
If you go to Google images you can have a look at some seahorse tanks. Do you know where you are getting your seahorses?

Flamingo has been keeping( and I belive) breeding them, so you could probally get a lot of info from him...
