the reason they have him in such a small tank at the store is because they have idea about how to care for fish properly. It is also just a tempory home for them so they will hopefully, but not likely, live out their lives in a proper size tank. i was at my lfs a few weeks ago to get some feeders and a dad and his kid were getting 2 oscars for their 20 gallon long tank that alrady had 2 zebra cichlids in it. Just because tey were 2.50 each.

he is saying that the fish will suffer because they can't tolerate the high levels if amonia and such that the water gets during a water cycle.

if you need anything else let me know, K?

Andrew

No don't feed your goldfish feeder fish...I'm not even sure they will eat them. Feeder fish can harbor all kinds of diseases that might infect your goldies.

i don't have any aim, myspace etc. only e-mail...birdsonthebrain@comcast.net

thanks...i appreciate it. when i had a regular comet, almost three inches long, he would eat feeder guppies like a hoover. litterally he would just suck them down.

I know everybody already told you not to get an Oscar for a 10g tank.....but they didn't really say why. The reason is because Oscars will get to be over a foot long. I mean really huge. And they have a habit of "throwing" tank decor and gravel at the glass, and this can break the tank. 10g tanks have really thin glass compared to a 75g or 90g, and are easily broken, I owuldn't even put an Oscar in a 10g for an hour while you cleaned his tank. Even if you have a large tank, you have to be really careful what you put in with an Oscar, it needs to be light so he can't break anything. They're really fun pets, if you can get them a big enough tank.

As for the cycling question, there is a way to cycle a tank before you put any fish into it. This is better because no fish has to suffer through the cycling process. But since you already have a fish in your tank, you're doing the best you can. It slows down the cycle to do so many water changes, but it's necessary to keep your fishy alive. Your tank will cycle eventually.

You're doing a great job with your tank! Most people would just put 10 comets in a 10g tank and wonder why they're all dying off :/ .

Oh, and about the feeder fish----I wouldn't try it, at least not yet. Your black moor probably isn't big enough to eat other fish yet. Once he gets really big, he might eat guppies, but I doubt he'll ever get big enough to eat comet goldfish. They'd have to fit completely into his mouth for him to eat them, goldfish can't tear up their food. Not that I'm recommending feeder fish for a black moor, I'm just letting you know the realities of it. Fedder godlfish are fatty anyway, and frequently diseased.

I had a goldfish eat a whole mouthful of cichlid fry once (they got under the divider), Goldfish are true omnivores that will eat fish that fit in their mouth. (Pet stores still sell goldfish with guppies and people wonder why "Beauty" dissapeared). But I don't recommend feeding them this way unless your trying to reduce a convict population explosion. Goldfish need more plants in their diet than protein and most flake foods already have more protein and fat than they need.

Also, when adding the chlorine treatment...
You do NOT need to treat 10 gallons of water. You only need to treat the new, fresh water you are adding to your tank. So if you're adding 1.5 gallons of fresh water, you only need enough treatment to treat 1.5gallons of water.
The won't apply to most people, but I want to clarify.
This is true if and only if you treat the water outside of the tank. If you add the treatment to the tank instead of the new water, you should dose based on the size of the tank and add the treatment before adding the new water. This is because the chemical reactions are concentration dependent, so if the treatment is diluted, it may not get all the chlorine even if the chlorine is also diluted. Its cheaper to treat the new water in a bucket, but if you ever fill a tank directly from the tap, do not under treat.

once this week wont do much. i suggest daily water changes. depending on how small the container i would do 50% to 90 % of water changes. add an airstone with a pump set on low so that you can areate the water as well. mind if i asked why wait till friday to get the tank?
